Car Sales Growth Under the Pandemic or August 2020

We’re all fully aware of the fact that the global pandemic has had a major impact on the automotive industry, causing a slowdown, further worsening the sales figures posted by various manufacturers. The automotive industry in India recorded a shocking figure of zero sales in the month of April 2020. However, after the gradual easing of the lockdown, sales have risen considerably. Mass market car manufacturers recorded a total sales of 2,34,376 units in August, a decent 20% more than the 1,95,800 units of sales that were posted at the same time last year. However, even after the recovery of sales, it is still a clear reflection of the dent the pandemic has caused in the domestic car market. We look at some of the top car manufacturer performers in August.

1) Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki has reported a substantial growth of 17.1%, which seemed quite promising for the brand. In the local market, the brand managed to sell a total of 1,16,704 units while the company exported an additional 7920 units. In August last year, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,06,413 units. While this growth may be a sign of great things to come, this year’s 3,09,287 units is still comparatively low to last year’s 6,18,271.

2) Mahindra

Mahindra has had its fair share of good response as well. The brand has sold 13,651 units in August 2020, with a very subtle growth for the car manufacturer at just 1%. In the August of 2019, the brand sold 13,507 units. Compared to last year, the Mahindra’s exports too have declined.

3) MG Motor

MG Motor has just two models as part of its portfolio in India at the moment: The Hector and Hector Plus. The manufacturer has sold 2851 units in August 2020. MG may not have churned out the same volumes as other car manufacturers, but it has managed to record a growth of 41%. Last year, MG had only the Hector on sale and sold 2018 units.

4) Hyundai

There has been a huge boost in sales last month for Hyundai. Locally, the manufacturer has sold 45,000 units and there’s been a growth of 19.9%, while the company has exported 6800 units. Last year, in the month of August, Hyundai churned out 38,205 units in the domestic market while the company has exported 17,800 units. There has been a very good response from customers buying the Hyundai Venue iMT, new Verna and Creta.

5) Kia Motors

Kia Motors too, has enjoyed its fair chunk of success as well, even with just two models in the line-up. Their Seltos SUV performed the best, recording a sales figure of 10,655 units. As for the Kia Carnival, the company has sold 190 units of the MPV. You can expect an extremely good response in the coming months from the newly launched Sonet compact SUV.

6) Tata Motors

Tata Motors is among one of the companies that has witnessed a good growth in sales too. The Indian car maker sold 18,583 units, resulting in a sufficient 154% rise compared to 7316 units of August last year. Thanks to all the recent updates to their models, the brand has performed well. The company has also trimmed its pricing structure in August.
